{"id":1440,"date":"2020-11-20T12:57:44","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T04:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.avantfaireim.com\/?p=1440"},"modified":"2020-11-20T12:57:45","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T04:57:45","slug":"can-concrete-jungle-go-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.avantfaireim.com\/zh\/can-concrete-jungle-go-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Concrete Jungle Go Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Picture:\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">unsplash.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that cement is a major source of carbon emission?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>Every year, the production of cement accounts for 8 percent of global CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions.<\/strong> <\/span>If the cement industry were a country, it would be the world\u2019s third-largest emitter of CO<sub>2<\/sub>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cement is the glue that holds concrete together, and <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">concrete is the second most consumed material on the planet after water<\/span><\/strong>. It is used to build our roads, bridges, sidewalks, airports, all kinds of buildings including skyscrapers. The world is expected to add more than two trillion square feet of new building space by 2060. That\u2019s the equivalent of adding another New York City every month for the next 40 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can we keep up with the speed of development while taking good care of the blue planet?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Some companies and institutions have come up with innovative solutions to reduce cement\u2019s carbon footprint, while other inventors are trying to develop cement-free concrete. How are these initiatives going so far? Let\u2019s take a look together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong><strong>CARBON CAPTURE<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The production of cement involves an energy intensive process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way you generally make cement is you mine limestone from earth and then you mix it with some other things, and heat it up in a very high temperature <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">about 1,500 \u2103<\/span><\/strong>. Then there\u2019s a chemical transformation that takes place, and there\u2019s CO<sub>2 <\/sub>from emitted as part of the chemical transformation, as well as from heating cement kilns to extremely high temperatures.\u201d explains Jeremy Gregory, Executive Director from MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One solution for reducing carbon footprint of cement is to <span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>trap the CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in concrete<\/strong>.<\/span> One Canadian company, Carbon Cure, has developed a technology that bolts onto an existing concrete plant, injects CO<sub>2<\/sub> into concrete while it\u2019s being mixed. When the concrete hardens, <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">CO<sub>2 <\/sub>is convert to mineral<\/span><\/strong>, and gets trapped in the concrete permanently. And the best things is adding CO<sub>2<\/sub> actually <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">makes concrete stronger<\/span><\/strong>, and requires less cement in the mix.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies have to pay to use Carbon Cure system and to buy CO<sub>2\u00a0 <\/sub>from the factory where it\u2019s emitted, but they save money by using less of the most expensive ingredient, cement. Although the costs would equal themselves out, it\u2019s still going to take the whole concrete industry changing the way they do things. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong><strong>ALTERED MIXTURE\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solidia Technologies, a New-Jersey based start-up has reinvented the cement mixture and curing process to cut CO<sub>2<\/sub> emission by up to 70 percent. In order to make OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), people mix limestone and sand with a ratio about 2\/3 to 1\/3. In Solidia, the mix ratio is about 50\/50, and reaction happens <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">at a much lower temperature around 1,200\u2103<\/span><\/strong>. This approach can <span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>cut 40% of CO<sub>2<\/sub> emission<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">, and<\/span> <span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>uses 30% less energy<\/strong><\/span> to make the same amount of cement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solidia also injects CO<sub>2<\/sub> into a drying chamber. As the cement hardens, the CO<sub>2<\/sub> becomes trapped in the final concrete product. Such process also <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">helps with water conservation<\/span><\/strong> by using CO<sub>2<\/sub> instead of water during curing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for now, Solidia product can only be made in a controlled environment, which means they can only make small blocks instead of ready-mix concrete. The company has been doing test pours all around the United States, and working hard to make sure the new technology is recognised under the industry standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong><strong>CEMENT-FREE CONCRETE<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gnanli Landrou was a doctoral student at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich). Together with his mentor, they developed a process to turn <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">clay-based excavation material<\/span><\/strong> into an alternative concrete without the addition of cement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team used purely natural materials, including the additives. The specific additive developed allowed the material to be able to harden within 24 hours but without cement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, they even started to develop the 2nd generation materials using all kind of waste, including construction waste, especially <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">excavation materials from construction demolition<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landrou\u2019s soil-based concrete can be poured while fresh. It hardens rapidly and is suitable non-load-bearing walls. It\u2019s not going to compete with traditional concrete since it is mostly suitable for 3 to 5-story houses or buildings. The product is considered <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">2.5 times cheaper, and 20 times eco-friendlier than conventional concrete<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not too far away from Switzerland, a company in the U.K. <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">uses by-product of other industries to make concrete<\/span><\/strong>. Cemfree is a totally cement-free alternative product developed by the DB Group back in 2015.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cemfree uses ground-granulated blast furnace slag, which is a by-product of iron and steel making, to produce concrete. By removing cement, the patented system has significantly reduced the embedded CO<sub>2<\/sub> in concrete. Cemfree also requires substantially less water than conventionally produced concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the above are just some examples from our desktop research. Even though we have so many alternatives, the Ordinary Portland Cement is still the cheapest, easiest to acquire, most-accepted material known to everyone. To change the status quo, all these alternatives still need to work on the product strength and cost. Can we trust the endurance of such products when facing extreme weather? Can monetary value be proven in real projects using these alternatives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">it requires a culture shift<\/span><\/strong>. It would involve not only the cement factories, but also architects, engineers, real estates developers, and also investors. What can we do?
